Summer has officially come to an end, and autumn has once again made its way into our lives. What may at first seem somewhat melancholic can, in fact, be truly beautiful. This is a season in which falling leaves create wonderful landscapes, while the mild weather still allows us to enjoy pleasant days. What more could one ask for? Life is made up of moments, and each of them should be lived to the fullest. There are always reasons to smile. Just as your needs change with the arrival of this new season, so too do those of your bonsai. Autumn is a special period, situated between the vigorous growth of summer and the dormancy of winter, for which your cherished tree must be properly prepared. Follow these steps!

Zokamin Autumn – an essential for your bonsai

1- Controlled watering: Your bonsai does not require as much watering at this time, so you should gradually reduce it. This is due to a much lower rate of evaporation. First of all, check the substrate’s level of moisture. Once you are certain, water carefully, ensuring that the soil never becomes waterlogged.

2- Fertilisation: At Zoka we provide fertilisers of the highest quality, carefully formulated for each season of the year, and therefore ideal for the development of your tree. Fertilisation in autumn should be carried out with a product low in nitrogen but rich in phosphorus and potassium. Do you know which product has these characteristics? Zokamin Autumn! You can already find it in our store. Later we will explain in more detail everything it can offer your bonsai. This type of fertiliser is perfect for achieving strong roots and greater resistance to the cold. Fertilisation should continue until the arrival of the first frosts.

3- Sunlight exposure: Natural light is highly beneficial for your bonsai as it prepares for winter. It will make the plant stronger. Try not to expose it to low temperatures for prolonged periods. Protect it from frost, especially if you have a tropical variety.

4- Pruning and pinching: The right moment for pruning is once leaf fall has finished. You may prune some branches and roots, always removing weaker leaves and branches. Think of it as grooming pruning – a light and gentle process. It is not the time for pinching! Pinching should be performed only during the growth months, from spring to the beginning of autumn.

As additional measures, you may protect the pot to safeguard the roots during winter. If your bonsai tolerates it, you could also proceed with repotting. Nothing else needs to be done!

Do you remember we mentioned Zokamin Autumn as the perfect fertiliser for this time of year? It is a liquid fertiliser whose main purpose is to promote the accumulation of the bonsai’s nutritional reserves for winter, thereby preparing it for the next budding season. It is ideal to stimulate the growth of new shoots and flowers in spring.

Its application is very straightforward. You should use this fertiliser from the end of summer until leaf fall. Here is the recommended dosage: foliar application 3 ml/l or watering 3–5 ml/l. It is fully compatible with other treatments.
