Taking care of a bonsai requires dedication, patience, and responsibility, especially when you know you’re looking after a beautiful yet delicate tree. Summer is one of the most challenging seasons, as high temperatures can have a significant impact on its health. That’s why it’s essential to provide your bonsai with the protection it needs during the hottest months of the year.
If you notice wilted or drooping leaves, dry or burnt leaf edges, premature yellowing, or a substrate that dries out almost immediately after watering, your bonsai is likely suffering from heat stress. To help you prevent this, at Zoka we want to share some practical tips on how to protect your bonsai from the summer heat.
How to Protect Your Bonsai from the Summer Heat
1. Provide Shade
Your bonsai still needs sunlight, but not in the same way as during other times of the year. The ideal location is one with partial shade, where it receives enough light without being exposed to intense direct sun.
Try to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day. A good routine is to let your bonsai receive morning sun and then keep it in the shade during the afternoon. This combination helps it stay healthy and vibrant.
2. Increase Watering
One of the most important aspects of protecting your bonsai during summer is adjusting your watering routine. The substrate dries much faster in hot weather, so more frequent watering is usually necessary.
Check the substrate’s moisture level every day and water thoroughly whenever the top layer becomes dry and light brown in color. Depending on the bonsai species, you may even need to water more than once a day.
3. Increase Ambient Humidity
Creating a more humid environment will benefit your bonsai. You can place trays filled with water near the tree or position other plants around it to naturally increase humidity.
Keep in mind the climate where you live, as some regions are naturally more humid than others. As always, avoid excessive humidity.
4. Protect the Pot
It may seem like a minor detail, but dark-colored plastic pots can become extremely hot under direct sunlight, raising the temperature of the root system and stressing the tree.
Move the pot out of direct sun or place it inside a larger pot made from a more insulating material. Protecting your bonsai from the summer heat also means protecting everything around it.
Finally, remember that summer is not the best time to put your bonsai under additional stress. Avoid heavy pruning, wiring, or repotting whenever possible.
And don’t forget to provide your bonsai with the nutrients it needs. At Zoka, our range of bonsai fertilizers is designed to support healthy growth throughout the season, helping your bonsai thrive even during the summer months.
