May is one of the busiest months in the bonsai calendar. At this stage, the bonsai enters a period of strong and continuous growth, developing new branches and leaves that will define its future structure. It is a key moment in which the main objective is to maintain the balance between vigour and control.

One of the most important tasks this month is general pinching. If some shoots have already been corrected during previous weeks, now is the time for more extensive work, especially on deciduous species. Pinching is not only used to maintain shape, but also to encourage the development of new ramification and allow light to reach the interior of the tree, stimulating inner budding.

Your bonsai, month by month. This is what May asks of you!

Watering must be consistent and carefully adjusted. With rising temperatures and the bonsai’s high level of activity, water demand increases significantly. It is essential to water when the substrate begins to dry out and always ensure good drainage in order to avoid root problems.

As for fertilising, May is a month in which the tree responds extremely well to nutrition. Growth is intense and sustained, meaning the bonsai requires a continuous supply of nutrients in order to remain strong and maintain balanced development.

When the bonsai enters this phase of vigorous growth, the aim is to enhance vitality without causing uncontrolled development. To achieve this, we continue using Zokamin Spring and reinforce it with Zokamin Flow Segunda Brotación, a nitrogen-rich stimulant that encourages the production of new shoots and increases ramification, something especially important at this stage of the cycle.

We can also continue supporting the tree with Zokamin Kitosan x3, helping to maintain its natural defences during this period of intense activity, and with Zokamin MicroFe+, which helps to correct and prevent deficiencies while maintaining a deep green colour and balanced growth.

If you applied Zoka Tricofung earlier, now is the time to reinforce it with Zoka Policarbol. More organic matter, more activity within the substrate, and the perfect environment for the bonsai to continue growing strongly.

In short, May is a month of vigorous growth in which pinching, regular watering and suitable fertilisation make all the difference. With proper nutrition, the bonsai will be able to develop with strength, density and a well-defined structure for the rest of the season.

We’ll be waiting for you at Zoka.
