Caring for a bonsai tree must be a constant process in which one must know perfectly the needs of the tree at all times. These plants go through different phases throughout the year and care must be adapted to what they require, bearing in mind that the tasks to be carried out can vary considerably depending on the type of bonsai you have. In any case, on a general level, we can say that there are some steps, depending on the season of the year, which are indispensable for the growth and full development of the bonsai. To give you a good knowledge base, we are going to create a work schedule for taking care of bonsai

Put this work schedule into practice to take care of your bonsais

If we start in spring, we find a bonsai coming out of its winter dormancy to start growing and flowering. The first thing you should do is confirm that the substrate remains moist. To do this, you have to water and you must do so, increasing the frequency according to the weather conditions of the geographical area. Regarding fertilisation, fertilising every two weeks is ideal. On the other hand, it is also a good time to repot the plant. Finally, pruning will be aimed at keeping the plant looking good and of a suitable size.

We continue to make progress with the work schedule for taking care of the bonsai and we are now in the summer. The most important thing in the summer is to water, even several times a day if the temperatures are very high. You have to combat excessive heat. Keeping the substrate moist is key to the growth of the tree. However, you must be careful not to over-water, as this will damage the plant severely. Depending on the species, it should be protected from the sunlight as much as possible. Fertilise less frequently than in spring and carry out regular maintenance pruning.

Autumn has arrived and we are in a season where the main objective is to strengthen the roots of the bonsai in preparation for the winter season. For this, a very good idea is to use a specific fertiliser like the one we offer at Zoka. It is very important to remove dry leaves and branches. If you are looking to shape your bonsai, now is the time to wire the branches. On watering, go from more to less. You should reduce it when winter approaches and temperatures are lower.

We finish the work schedule for taking care of the bonsai with winter, since it is the period of least activity of the plant. The most important thing is to give it the protection it needs so that it is not affected by frost, wind or excessive rainfall. Remember not to fertilise the bonsai during these difficult months. Pruning and watering should be light, just to remove dead branches and leaves and to maintain the right amount of moisture in the substrate.

Give your bonsai what it deserves!
