If you have a bonsai and you are unsure whether to touch it in February, keep reading. Acting without proper knowledge could be the mistake that affects it for the rest of the year. Here is everything you need to know about your bonsai in February.
February may seem like a quiet month, still very much part of winter, but in some areas it is the moment when the bonsai begins to awaken. It is not a month for rushing or carrying out extensive work. It is a time to observe and to understand what your treasured tree is asking of you.
This is how you should care for your bonsai in February
And here comes the first key question: how do we know whether our bonsai is starting to become active? Your bonsai in February sends signals.
If you are unsure whether it is still dormant or beginning to awaken, there is something very simple you can observe: the buds. When they begin to swell, this is one of the clearest signs that the bonsai is preparing to sprout.
If your bonsai is deciduous and already showing activity, this is a good time to consider pruning and, if you have experience, wiring. Always proceed calmly and without haste, shaping the bonsai gradually.
If your bonsai is evergreen, this is very important: it must not be pruned and wired on the same day. First prune and then allow the tree to rest. Around two weeks later you may proceed with wiring. This helps to avoid unnecessary stress, which could seriously affect the health of the bonsai.
After pruning a bonsai, it is not simply a matter of waiting. We can also help it recover more effectively. At this stage, products such as Zokamin Kitosan x3 can help strengthen the bonsai’s natural defences after pruning. It also improves growth, root development and nutrient absorption. It helps combat stress and is ideal for preventing disease and general weakness.
One of the most common questions in February concerns repotting. Can a bonsai be repotted in February? It depends on the climate and on the condition of the bonsai.
It is not repotted according to the calendar, but when the tree requires it: just before sprouting, with swollen but still closed buds. If there is no longer a risk of severe frost and the bonsai needs it due to poor drainage, compacted roots or old substrate, it is possible to repot with confidence.
When the bonsai begins to show more active shoots, we can start thinking about nutrition. In February, products such as Zokamin MicroFe+ help to strengthen the foliage and maintain balanced growth. They also prevent and correct micronutrient deficiencies.
In February, watering also changes. The bonsai is not yet consuming large amounts of water, but it soon will be. Do not water out of habit; water by observing the substrate. Your bonsai in February is very different from the one you will find in spring.
If you remember only one thing about February, let it be this: it is not a month for major work. It is a month for observation. Observing, understanding and accompanying your bonsai is the foundation for caring for it properly from the very beginning.
That said, at Zoka we also recommend keeping an eye on another of our bonsai fertilisers: Zokamin Primavera. Looking ahead, it is ideal to begin applying it in March and to continue throughout April and May, when the bonsai is in full sprouting phase. It is an exceptional invigorating fertiliser.
